Under general supervision, you will conduct research specifically in roll-to-roll (R2R) processing science and battery manufacturing R&D to lower cost, raise energy density, increase production yield, and address manufacturing bottlenecks. You will work in close collaboration with other researchers involved with ORNL’s AMO-funded R2R Collaboration and applied energy storage program. This position resides in the Department of Energy (DOE) Battery Manufacturing R&D Facility (BMF) and the Roll-to-Roll Manufacturing Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


Main Responsibilities/Duties

You will be expected to prepare technical reports, present results in conferences, publish peer-reviewed articles, and develop ideas for future funding opportunities. Your main responsibilities/duties include:

- Develop R2R processing methods for multilayer and 2D/3D structured coatings that focus on colloidal science, formulation chemistry, dispersion deposition physics, coating drying and consolidation physics, and electrospinning of non-wovens for a broad range of energy, water purification, and CO2 conversion applications

- Dispersion chemistry for slurry processing of active and inactive materials for battery electrode coatings including surface charge measurement (zeta potential), rheology studies, order of electrode constituent addition, multicomponent dispersants, mixing protocol optimization, binder optimization, coating parameter optimization, and drying protocol optimization

- Application of novel (organic, aqueous, and co-solvent based) electrode coatings, curing, and drying technologies

- Advanced characterization of coatings, electrochemical performance, and life cycle testing for lithium-ion cells and other applications such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells, membrane electrolyzers, flexible electronics, flexible sensors, flexible PV cells, water purification, and CO2 conversion.

- Investigate new materials and manufacturing schemes to be implemented in battery manufacturing

- Conduct research that focuses on understanding how materials interact in slurry processing and behave using different coating technologies

- Use multiple types of techniques for analysis of structures and materials in energy storage devices including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, and STEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS)

- Presenting and reporting research results, preparing invention disclosures, and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner

- Ensuring compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

- Maintaining strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required

This position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline.  You must possess demonstrated expertise and background in energy storage research, electrochemical characterization, use of analytical methods for device performance, and the ability to learn scaling of R2R manufacturing methods from benchtop to pilot scale. Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills are mandatory. The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and be willing to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort are required. Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs is required. The abilities to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines are keys to success. Expertise in the areas of batteries and experience in material processing is preferred.  Prior experience in solid-state battery components, electrode formulation and fabricating, and battery testing and analysis are highly desirable. A strong publication record is required.

Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.


Qualifications Desired

Experience in R2R processing, coating technologies, battery assembly, cell testing and post-mortem analysis is preferred.
