The Electric Drives Research (EDR) Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for an electric motor designer post-doc position to support the electric motor research program in the areas of hybrid, plug in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell vehicle propulsion technologies.  The EDR group supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technology Program as well as other customers in the development of advanced electric traction drives for automotive applications. The successful candidate will be capable of developing innovative motor concepts as well as performing and providing technical guidance to support the Vehicle Technologies Program goals.


Major Duties/Responsibilities


The successful candidate will:


  • Work independently and with senior technical staff to develop new motor concepts focused on achieving specified targets, both at a motor and system level.
  • Be versant in various modeling and simulation programs as well as electromagnetic, structural and thermal FEA programs.
  • Capable of carrying designs through to prototype build and test.
  • Be cognizant and knowledgeable about motor drive circuitry and control algorithms.
  • Support technical projects in the expansion of R&D in Electric Machinery Research while striving to work with and involve other areas of expertise within the laboratory.
  • Have good oral and written skills to be able to present research results to others and at national and international technical society meetings such as IEEE, SAE and others.
  • Publish original work in technical reports, peer reviewed journals, and professional society magazines.


Qualifications Required:


The position requires:


  • A Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a focus on electrical machinery design and relevant experience (up to 4 years after Ph. D. graduation) with motor design and analysis tools.
  • Educational experience in power electronics and control of ac drives used in vehicular electric drive systems.
  • Hands on laboratory experience performing testing and analysis of machines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong people skills to support team building and leadership.
  • Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer reviewed journals or presentations at national meetings, are expected.
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity is an important requirement.

Some travel will be required for this position.
