Purpose:

The Transportation Analytics & Decision Sciences Group (TADS) is seeking to fill a Senior Research and Development Staff position with a focus on Integrated Assessment relating future transportation scenarios to sustainability metrics and Global Change targets.  The successful candidate will be able to collaborate and leverage the work of TADS staff in the areas of transportation demand forecasts and technology adoption models. Sustainable electrification of the transportation sector is a central theme to scenarios and requires an integrated view of energy production, charging infrastructure, and distribution.

 

TADS goal is to find sustainable multi-modal (air, land, water, pipelines) solutions to passenger and freight transportation challenges within the broad context of environmental, social, and economic goals. Research teams apply statistical and econometric modeling, machine learning, simulation, and optimization methods to data-intensive analyses.  The resulting data sets and models seek to illuminate historical performance of the transportation system with multiple metrics, to predict future performance under various scenarios, and to search for optimal pathways to sustainable futures.   

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

You will collaborate with ORNL staff from various groups who are experts in technical areas such as transportation demand modeling, electrification of transportation modes, renewable energy production, energy storage, and electricity distribution.  Your collaboration will seek to develop integrated scenarios and assessments of potential futures for advanced transportation concepts and the interaction with energy generation and distribution.  The goal is to strengthen ORNL’s analytical foundations for modeling the sustainability of transportation scenarios. 

 

  • Collaborate with research staff across ORNL to develop integrated assessments of energy use and environmental impacts based on potential transportation scenarios.
  •  Develop methodologies and analyses to compare the sustainability of electrification in transportation technologies and their integration with power production and distribution.
  • Lead collaboration between ORNL research staff and researchers at top US and international institutions to advance the Sustainable Transportation program.
  • Collaborate with TADS staff to develop customer behavior models reflecting individual choices under various technological and policy scenarios.
  • Publish scientific results in highly rated journals.
  • Mentor Post-doctorate and junior research staff to increase the impact of their research.
  • Lead development of proposals to expand ORNL research into new areas related to integrate assessment modeling. 

 

 

 

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD plus five years of experience in an area of transportation research, preferably including a background in economics.
  • Knowledge of modeling techniques for integrated assessments.
  • Ability to engage with researchers in a wide variety of transportation and energy technologies.
  • Strong publication history in highly rated journals.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • History of engagement with international researchers in energy, transportation, and climate policy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of global impacts of technology scenarios.
