Purpose

 

Green hydrogen and electrolysis are becoming more and more important to solve scientific challenges enabling a carbon-free or net-zero carbon economy and reduce human’s impact on the climate. This position is seeking applicants for a Senior or Distinguished R&D Staff position to lead and execute research in electrochemistry and electrochemical methods including the use of these methods in electrolysis and energy storage and conversion. You will have the opportunity to develop a research program primarily in the areas of 1) catalyst development for hydrogen generation from various sources and 2) advanced process development and manufacturing science for electrolyzer devices.

 

You should have a demonstrated record of 1) technical accomplishment in the field of catalysis, electrolysis, characterization, performance evaluation, and materials processing and manufacturing for electrolyzer devices, or related fields.  These research areas are aligned with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, and other DOE programs.

 

You will report to the Energy Storage and Conversion Manufacturing Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will primarily be conducted at the ORNL’s Grid Research, Integration & Deployment Center (GRID-C). You are expected to collaborate with staff across the entire ORNL and serve as the subject matter expert and technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings as well as at other national labs, industry, and universities.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the science of electrolysis and execute a new research program direction on electrolysis.
  • Develop novel electrolyzer manufacturing for net-zero-carbon fuels generation and upgradation.
  • Establish new capabilities in electrolysis and hydrogen production.
  • Collaborate with a large group of scientists across ORNL to establish a unique program around electrolysis.
  • Publish results in high impact journals.
  • Serve as a technical resource for staff and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Work with staff and program managers to influence national R&D agenda.
  • Write and lead research and development proposals.
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and project reviews

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or an equivalent discipline with a minimum of 12 years of experience in catalysis, electrolyzers, hydrogen generation, batteries, fuel cells or manufacturing of electrochemical processes.
  • A record of excellence in electrolysis research through peer-reviewed journal articles and/or issued patents.
  • A record of excellence in program development and project management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
