Purpose

 

Hydrogen storage is a key enabling technology to advance hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in applications including stationary power, portable power, and transportation, where high density hydrogen storage is a challenge for all these applications. This position is seeking applicants for a Senior or Distinguished R&D Staff position to lead and execute research in high-density hydrogen storage including the use of both physical-based and material-based methods. The candidate is expected to develop a research program primarily in the areas of 1) material development and 2) advanced process development and manufacturing science for high-density hydrogen storage devices.

 

Candidates should have a demonstrated record of 1) technical accomplishment in the field of material development, characterization, performance evaluation, and materials processing and manufacturing for hydrogen storage devices, or related fields.  These research areas are aligned with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, and other DOE programs.

 

The position will report to the Energy Storage and Conversion Manufacturing Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will primarily be conducted at the ORNL’s Grid Research, Integration & Deployment Center (GRID-C). The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with staff across the entire ORNL. The candidate will serve as the subject matter expert and technical communicator at conferences and project review meetings as well as at other national labs, industry, and universities.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the science of hydrogen storage.
  • Develop novel materials to improve hydrogen storage capacity.
  • Establish new capabilities in hydrogen storage.
  • Collaborate with a large group of scientists across ORNL to establish a unique program around hydrogen storage.
  • Publish results in high impact journals.
  • Serve as a technical resource for staff and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Work with staff and program managers to influence national R&D agenda.
  • Write and lead research and development proposals.
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and project reviews

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or related discipline with a minimum of six years of experience in material development, catalysis, electrolyzers, hydrogen generation, hydrogen storage, batteries, fuel cells or manufacturing of electrochemical processes.
  • A record of excellence in hydrogen storage research through peer-reviewed journal articles and/or issued patents.
  • A record of excellence in program development and project management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
