The Vehicle Power Electronics Research (ViPER) Group at ORNL is seeking an internationally recognized full-time power electronics researcher to conduct projects, expand research, and manage research and development activities to support vehicle power electronics research in the areas of high-power EV charging systems including on-board and off-board chargers, integrated charger technologies, wireless and plug-in charging systems.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead R&D projects and expand the R&D portfolio in high-power charging systems for electric vehicles utilizing technical experience and professional network and capabilities.
  • Expand research beyond light-duty passenger vehicles to other applications including medium and heavy-duty vehicles, off-road vehicles, space and aircraft vehicles, naval / marine vehicles, and railway vehicles.
  • Utilize ORNL multidisciplinary capabilities and multimodal strengths by exploring breakthroughs jointly with other ORNL organizations including but not limited to the relevant areas of materials science, manufacturing science, battery science, high-performance computing, etc.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other organizations including manufacturers, charging network manufacturers and operators, utilities, and other DOE national laboratories.
  • Work both independently and in research teams to perform design, development, analysis, modeling, simulation, and testing of power electronics systems, subsystems, and components for high-power charging research.
  • Explore new converter and charging system architectures for potential size, weight, volume, and cost savings in high-power charging technologies.
  • Develop new proposals for DOE and non-DOE agencies.
  • Publish original research results in peer reviewed journals and professional society conferences,
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Have excellent oral and written skills in preparing and presenting research results to the peer reviewers and sponsors.


Qualifications Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (or related discipline) with a focus on vehicular power electronics and at least five years of work experience
  • Prior examples of research in applications of advanced power semiconductor technologies
  • Experience in embedded control system hardware and software development
  • Capable of power electronics designs, hardware development and prototyping, and testing and evaluations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for presentations, reports, proposals, and publications
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences
  • Prior work experience with industry or other national laboratories
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity
  • A strong commitment and understanding of electrical work safety
  • Some travel will be required for this position 
  • No clearance is required
