Purpose

This position seeks to fill a research role in the Engine Technologies Research Group with an internationally recognized full-time expert in medium/heavy-duty engine technologies.  The required areas of expertise include state of the art combustion technologies for diesel and spark ignition engines suitable for on-road and off-road applications as well as for alternative fuels that can lead to lower carbon emissions, including natural gas, propane, and other advanced and renewable fuels.  Knowledge of integrated energy system aspects such as transient control strategies are also required.  The successful applicant will also have experience in one or more of the following: electrified powertrains including hybrid integration, air handling systems, waste heat recovery systems, and exhaust system thermal management.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead experimental and modeling research for medium and heavy-duty engines resulting in lower carbon emissions through high efficiency and alternative fuel utilization.
  • Develop and opportunities for optimization of transient controls and thermal management through system optimization, including with the use of machine learning.
  • Develop multidisciplinary research leveraging ORNL capabilities and core strengths towards solving critical challenges associated with hybridized powertrains as applied to transportation sector.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other organizations including original equipment manufacturers, universities, automotive suppliers, and other relevant research laboratories.
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and project reviews.
  • Mentor postdoctoral researchers, students, and interns.

 

Qualifications Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent field with a focus on internal combustion engines, and at least 8 years of associated work experience.
  • Work experience at an OEM for medium or heavy-duty engines.
  • Demonstrated capability of conducting and disseminating original and impactful research, leading, and managing R&D projects.
  • A strong commitment to promoting positive work environment and scientific integrity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for presentations, reports, proposals, and publications.
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Prior work experience with industry or other national laboratories.
  • A strong commitment and understanding of laboratory work safety.
  • Some travel will be required for this position. No clearance level required.
