The Power Electronics Systems Integration (PESI) Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applications for an Associate Staff member position with emphasis on mechanical and electromechanical design for power electronic hardware development, rapid prototyping, and systems integration supporting multiple energy technology programs.  The candidate will assist in creating electrical and mechanical system designs, support the semi-conductor packaging and subsystem manufacturing equipment and thermal analysis of the hardware prototypes. The candidate should have a background in 3D design and FEA modeling for power electronics and knowledge of advanced manufacturing equipment and design.  Experience working with power electronics packaging and power systems is desired. 


Major duties will include power electronics manufacturing of prototypes and systems integration used in energy storage and power conversion technologies. Mechanical and electromechanical fabrication, assembly, and testing will also be a major focus of the position.  Additional duties include specification, setup, and operation  of existing manufacturing and test equipment and assisting technicians and research professionals in daily activities. The selected candidate will interact with principal investigators, management, engineers, technicians, internal and external fabrication shops, sponsors, and other stakeholders. 



Major Duties / Responsibilities


  • Be able to provide mechanical design for various power electronic related energy systems using computer-aided design software (SOLIDWORKS)
  • Be able to conduct general thermal analysis of various power electronic related energy systems using finite element methods (COMSOL)
  • Possess a basic understanding of die-level power electronic device design and construction (“Packaging”)
  • Possess a basic understanding of power electronic related energy systems and general circuits
  • Be able to read and understand complex electrical schematics to support mechanical designs for various power electronic related energy systems
  • Be able to assemble and assist in the testing of various power electronic related energy systems
  • Develop and procure bill of materials to support power electronics, subsystem manufacturing, and equipment raw materials


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree of science and technology or engineering discipline. 
  • Experience in mechanical and electrical design of various power electronics or microelectronic systems
  • Ability to communicate design concepts through presentations to engineers and other designers


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SOLIDWORKS or other computer-aided design program
  • Experience with thermal modeling and FEA/CFD design software
  • Experience with automated systems
  • Experience with MATLAB
  • Experience working in electrical energy environment
  • Experience working in a team environment with other designers working together on large assemblies
  • Experience in communicating with vendors and fabricators


Some travel will be required for this position.
