Purpose

 

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the ­­­­Advanced Manufacturing Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking technical staff to help with the development of electrical systems (power, sensing and control) for advanced prototype machine tools (additive manufacturing, composites, robotics and automation and machine tools).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

 

The selected candidate will:

- Assist in the design, fabrication and testing electrical systems for new prototype components and system used in the manufacturing industry including

  • Additive Manufacturing systems (metal and composites)
  • Composite manufacturing systems
  • Robotics and automation
  • Machine tools

- Collaborate with a team of engineers including mechanical, electrical, computer scientists that are industry, academia and other national labs on the development of these systems

-  Help in the development of new system defense systems (unmanned ground, surface, subsurface, air systems) using advanced manufacturing systems.

- Help in the development of new energy systems (nuclear, fossil, renewable power generation) using advanced manufacturing systems.

- Lead the assembly, testing and integration of electrical signal and power systems.

 

Qualifications Required

The position requires:

A BS degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology with experience in the design, fabrication and testing power systems, signal monitoring and controls

Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership are required

The demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets is required

Some activities may require export control and/or national security interests.  Therefore, U.S. citizenship is preferred.

 

Additional Qualifications Preferred

  • Knowledge of robotics and realtime controls
  • Understanding of the AM process and its challenges
