Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for a strategic position that will provide scientific leadership and innovation for emerging applications of additive manufacturing for radioisotope production.

This scientific leader will support rapid growth in the radioisotope production missions at ORNL by developing new capabilities for advanced manufacturing of both metal and ceramic radioisotope production targets to increase radioisotope yields and heat removal and to improve post-irradiation processing.

The position will reside within the Target Design, Analysis, and Qualification Group of the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD), which is part of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate at ORNL. RSTD is a world leader in isotope production, and provides leadership in actinide science, delivers new innovations in isotope production technology, and advances the field of radiochemical processing methods to provide radioisotopes for science, medicine, industry, and security.

ORNL has nuclear, radiological, and scientific facilities and highly specialized equipment that serve as unique resources for radioisotope R&D. These resources include the High Flux Isotope Reactor (world’s highest neutron flux reactor; https://neutrons.ornl.gov/hfir), the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=ETXGSp5KE9X) and other hot cell facilities which are used to produce an array of radioisotopes (e.g. Cf-252, Pu-238, Ni-63, Ac-227) for industrial and medical applications and scientific discovery (e.g., super-heavy elements).  ORNL is also home to the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (https://www.ornl.gov/facility/mdf), a user facility focused on early-stage R&D for advanced manufacturing. These internationally renowned facilities, combined with ORNL’s high-caliber, professional, and highly engaged work force create a research environment with unmatched potential for impact and innovation

The successful candidate will be expected to forge ties across organizations, both internal and external to ORNL. They will create integrated teams to provide transformational advances in target technologies.

 

 Major duties and responsibilities will include:

 

  • Work with the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) and with external specialists to evaluate advanced manufacturing techniques, including selective laser melting and binder-jet additive manufacturing, for current isotope product lines
  • Identify the materials qualifications necessary to irradiate advanced manufactured target components in the HFIR
  • Generate feasibility studies for producing isotope production targets through advanced manufacturing, identifying strategic equipment and infrastructure investments
  • Demonstrate the capability to qualify and irradiate advanced manufactured isotope production targets, and validate performance models through post irradiation examination
  • Disseminate results through peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and presentations for sponsors and the technical community

 

Qualifications Required:

 

  • This position requires a Doctoral degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field and a minimum of six years of relevant experience.
  • Record of excellence in research and development, as evident by publications, awards, and funded grants
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced manufacturing of metals and ceramics
  • Knowledge of thermal and mechanical performance of materials in nuclear systems
