Overview:

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure for technical and scientific professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. As an important part of the broader High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, the division also hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), a Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility.

You will have the opportunity to work with NCCS users across a wide variety of computational domains to enable their efficient use of the world class facilities provided by the NCCS. We seek to hire an Applied Mathematician specializing in numerical algorithms and software targeting GPU-accelerated HPC systems to join our team. This role involves balancing three major types of activities: liaising with users of NCCS computing resources including potential analysis and optimization of their software; service to the NCCS through activities like reviewing proposals requesting time on NCCS resources and evaluating potential future NCCS software and hardware; and research in a field relevant to the Science Engagement section and the NCCS.

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an outstanding 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are essential for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with NCCS users to help ensure they make productive use of their NCCS system allocations, including the potential of evaluating, validating, and optimizing the numerical aspects of their software.
  • Review proposals requesting allocations on NCCS systems for their computational readiness and possibly also scientific merit.
  • Provide expertise to OLCF procurement activities and assist in capability planning for future OLCF procurements.
  • Conduct applied mathematics/performance engineering research, disseminate results in journal articles and/or conference papers, and participate in development of research proposals.
  • Participate in HPC community efforts that define requirements for system software, libraries, and tools to meet the needs of NCCS users.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science, or computational science/engineering.
  • 5+ years of post-Ph.D. experience in an applied mathematics, computer science, or computational science/engineering position with proven experience developing application software and/or libraries targeting high performance computing systems.
  • Expertise developing software targeting large-scale computational resources that involves numerical methods, parallel algorithms, inter-process communication and synchronization, and at least one traditional high performance computing programming language (Fortran or C++).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years relevant research experience beyond Ph.D.
  • Experience with the development and evaluation of GPU-accelerated numerical algorithms and implementations, such as dense/sparse/nonlinear solvers or FFTs.
  • Experience with the integration of machine learning into traditional modeling and simulation algorithms (e.g., through use of surrogate models), including evaluation of the numeric and performance impact of such integration.
  • Experience with developing performance portable software for scalable GPU-accelerated HPC systems using approaches like the Kokkos abstraction layer or OpenMP target offload.
  • The ability to interface with, and potentially collaborate with, NCCS users on the users’ software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation.
