Aquatic Ecologist Technician (Temporary)

Purpose:

The Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems section within the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking a field-oriented ecology technician who can provide professional support for a variety of studies being conducted at ORNL. You should have the experience necessary to perform laboratory as well as field studies, including experience collecting biological and water quality samples, data analysis, and report writing. 

 

Traveling in east Tennessee and across the country is expected as part of this position.
 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participate in small field sampling crews in data collection in aquatic systems ranging from small streams to large reservoirs.
  • Measuring various physiological and biochemical parameters in biota, including fish.
  • Processing biota, sediment, and water samples for contaminant analysis.
  • Experimentation with and care of fish in the laboratory.
  • Experience with identifying fish species and managing ichthyological collections.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, fisheries, environmental science, or a related discipline
  • Experience with biota identification (including fish) and chemical and hydrologic sampling
  • Technical field experience.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues
  • Carry out technical duties with safety as the priority.
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in aquatic ecology, fisheries, environmental science, or a related discipline
  • Field hydrological or analytical/chemical instrument skills are desirable
  • Experience with trailering and operating various types of boats for inland fisheries work is desirable
  • Experience with field data collection around hydroelectric and thermoelectric power plants is a plus

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Candidates must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Candidates must be able to endure exposure to all types of weather, nuisance plants and insects and uneven and steep terrain conditions.
  • Candidates must be able to carry and set up testing equipment, which can involve some heavy lifting and frequent bending and crouching.
  • Ability to wear protective gear such as chest waders, life vests and PPE.

 

Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire  physical is required.

 

* The appointment length will be up to 12 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.*
