Purpose: 

The Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applicants for the Division Director of the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD). This position reports to the ISED Associate Laboratory Director (ALD). The incumbent will be responsible for leading and managing the science and technology capabilities within the Division consistent with existing programmatic missions and emerging opportunities, and for establishing and implementing strategies for future directions. The RSTD performs radioisotope research and development (R&D) and production.  ORNL produces two thirds of radioisotopes in the DOE portfolio, for use in national security, medicine, industry, research, and deep space exploration.  

 

ORNL High Flux  Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and other nuclear and radiological facilities  ensure that important isotopes are available for medical, industrial, national security, and scientific uses, and also underpin advances in nuclear energy and nuclear security technologies.  RSTD is committed to leadership class R&D that integrates the division's comprehensive staff expertise, strategic resources, and facility capabilities to address the needs of the sponsor community, while also leveraging the broader ORNL capabilities to maximize the scientific output of the laboratory.  

ORNL has  a legacy of leadership in radioisotopes, specifically in human health. We delivered the first shipment of C-14 for cancer treatments in 1946 and today we are the sole provider of actinium-227 for the first FDA approved alpha radiotherapy drug, Xofigo, produced by Bayer Pharmaceutical. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

Provide leadership that focuses and integrates the Division towards science and technology goals consistent with the programmatic missions of ISED and the Laboratory 

 

Provide direct and/or supervise direct point-of-contact program management interface to sponsoring organizations, including the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and NASA. Coordinate closely with ORNL Program Management for the Office of

Science Isotopes Program other Strategic Partnership Programs 

 

Collaborate with management peers to assist the ALD in defining and implementing strategic programmatic R&D missions for ISED and the Laboratory 

 

Responsible for development and scale up of R&D processes to reliable production processes 

 

Partner and collaborate with other U.S. and international laboratories and universities to advance radioisotope science and engineering.Represent ORNL before advisory committees. 

 

Emphasize the scientific productivity and reputation of RSTD through publications, intellectual property development, and engagement of staff in external organizations 

 

Execute line management responsibilities including supervision of section heads, budget and business planning, salary planning, staff recruitment and development, employee relations, and performance management 

 

Serve as the division work authority, striving to implement a culture within the workplace that is attentive to the identification of hazards and responsive to providing controls and processes to address the hazards  

 

Qualifications Required:  

Qualified candidates will have a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related technical field with at least 15 years’ experience in a radioisotope-related R&D environment.  

 

It is preferred that candidates have line organization management experience at the group or division level (or equivalent) 

 

Candidates for this position must have strong leadership and business management skills with a proven track record of communication through technical publications, development and execution of a nuclear-related R&D vision and strategy, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills that can interact effectively with a broad spectrum of people and issues in a fast-paced R&D environment  

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program
