Overview:
The Enrichment Systems Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) seeks an Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) Technician to support research and development (R&D) activities that advance isotope enrichment technologies and stable isotope production. The EI&C Engineering Group focuses on the application of hardware and software solutions to support a variety of enrichment systems and testbeds with an intent to strengthen Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s leadership in isotope production and enrichment technology innovation. ESED serves as the national steward for gas centrifuge technology and continues to expand the nation’s stable isotope capabilities. The selected candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, integration, and commissioning of EI&C components that support these mission‑critical systems.
Responsibilities:
- Support the development, integration, and deployment of EI&C systems that enable safe, reliable, and efficient operation of enrichment systems and isotope‑production technologies.
- Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and system checks on electrical, instrumentation, and control components to ensure equipment availability and operational readiness.
- Contribute to the design and fabrication of EI&C assemblies, including panel layouts, wiring configurations, and system interfaces.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation such as schematics, test plans, configuration records, calibration reports, and work instructions to support system lifecycle needs.
- Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and project teams to define work scopes, understand work controls, and execute tasks aligned with program objectives.
- Apply ORNL safety, security, and quality requirements in all work activities, supporting a strong operational and research culture. - Participate in professional development, training, and continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen EI&C capabilities across the group.
Qualifications:
- AS degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Technology, Electronics and Automation Technology, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of technical training, certifications, and hands‑on experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working with electrical systems and applying I&C technologies.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, apply industrial standards, and evaluate equipment specifications using sound technical judgment.
- Experience with PLC/PAC‑based control systems, industrial instrumentation, embedded control hardware, and industrial networking equipment.
- Proficiency with measurement and test equipment such as digital multimeters, function generators, process meters, and programmable power supplies.
- Experience fabricating or assembling electrical panels, wiring harnesses, PCBs, instrumentation, and cable assemblies.
- Ability to configure and operate commercial EI&C hardware using OEM documentation and user manuals.
- Experience preparing bills of materials, obtaining vendor quotes, and submitting purchase requests.
- Ability to develop and execute test plans, technical procedures, and work instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to manage tasks, adapt to changing requirements, and deliver high‑quality technical work.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance which requires US Citizenship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks platforms to produce electrical schematics and equipment designs.
- Familiar with Allen‑Bradley automation hardware, National Instruments data‑acquisition platforms, or comparable industrial programmable controllers.
- Proficiency in precision hand‑soldering of wiring terminations, electronic components, and printed circuit boards.
- Experience supporting process systems such as pneumatic controls, water‑cooling loops, vacuum systems, flow/pressure regulation, or motor‑drive equipment.
- Familiar with industry Quality Assurance (QA) requirements, including software quality assurance, engineering design control, or configuration management practices.
Special Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain:
- HSPD‑12 PIV badge
- DOE Q clearance, including participation in the Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP), which requires pre‑placement and random drug testing.
