Overview: 

The Collections and Engineering Technologies Section within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division seeks applications for an Electrical/Electronics Technician with experience in the assembly of specialized systems and instrumentation and control system hardware and software to make significant contributions to projects involving nuclear nonproliferation, instrumentation for mission-critical systems, and other research projects.

The National Security Sciences Directorate conducts research and development to confront some of the nation’s most difficult security challenges and adversaries. Our directorate houses S&T leadership in cybersecurity and cyber-physical resiliency, data analytics, geospatial science and technology, nuclear nonproliferation, and high-performance computing for sensitive national security missions. We draw on the Laboratory’s exceptional facilities and work closely with leading researchers in other areas at the lab such as nuclear and chemical sciences and engineering, applied materials, advanced manufacturing, biosecurity, transportation, and computing. Our multi-disciplinary research teams are passionate about discovery and innovation as we create science-based solutions to complex security threats that put public safety, national defense, energy infrastructure, and the economy at risk.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

This position is responsible for working with research staff to develop complex development hardware and software by fabricating, programming, calibrating, testing, and troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems for a wide variety of projects. It involves the operation and implementation of PLC hardware and software and using best practices in electrical wiring and assembly of precision electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical systems. The successful candidate will be expected to work with researchers and other technicians to deploy robust operational systems with careful attention to detail. They will also be expected to calibrate a variety of sensors in instrumentation and control systems. This position will require serving as an effective and innovative team member operating equipment and collecting data in field test campaigns.

 

The successful candidate will work well in a team environment as an effective contributing member. Technical support staff members are expected to contribute to the success of the project by applying their creativity and ability to develop innovative solutions in a collaborative environment. This position requires the flexibility to adapt to a wide variety of projects to meet the priorities of sponsoring agencies. It will require the ability to learn new technologies and systems without formal training as necessary to meet project goals. This position requires clear documentation of software and hardware systems including wiring diagrams. It also requires the ability to work with minimum direction from research staff and management and to independently work with hardware manufacturers in troubleshooting hardware and software.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  •  A.S. or A.A.S. degree in electrical, mechanical, nuclear, industrial engineering technology, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with hazardous reactive gas systems, cryogenic systems/components, vacuum systems/components, HMI/PLC controlled systems/components, instrumentation, and associated mechanical and inspection equipment (e.g., leak detectors, RGA's etc.).
  • Familiar with use of office automation tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases).
  • Ability to work shift work, flexible hours and overtime.
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after the offer. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q/SCI clearances
  • Experience with DOE safety, security, and regulatory requirements
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Investigation (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.
