Overview:
The Operations Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a technical staff to lead the System Acceptance & User Environment (SA&UE) group which is responsible for evaluating the functionality, performance, and usability of compute and storage resources as well as maintaining the user environment on all NCCS systems. We are seeking a self-starter with a strong background in high-performance computing (HPC) environments, and a clear demonstration of effective leadership and communication skills including the ability to prioritize and delegate responsibilities effectively. In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide leadership to the SA&UE group to advance technical professional domain expertise in the development of a robust testing suite to assist in deployments of new systems, the evaluation of new system and user facing software, the design of infrastructure to collect, analyze, and monitoring the functionality and performance of NCCS systems, and as a result support ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s best-in-class R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture.

 

The NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals tackling large-scale problems across a broad range of scientific domains for accelerating scientific discovery and engineering advances. The NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a group of 8+ HPC engineers responsible for the development of a robust testing suite to assist in deployments of new systems and evaluation of new system and user facing software.
  • Design of infrastructure to collect, analyze, and monitor the functionality, performance, and usability of NCCS systems throughout their lifetime.
  • Overseeing the deployment and maintenance of the user environment for all NCCS systems across all supported programs.
  • Responsible for all aspects of personnel management including recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
  • Collaborate with other groups/teams within the NCCS as needed to meet organizational goals.
  • Manage group budget/expenses related to software, maintenance, and travel.
  • Ensure that all work is done in adherence to ORNL/Lab safety standards and policies.

 Qualifications Required:

  • Requires a Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years relevant experiences, a M.S. with a minimum of 7 years experiences, or a B.S. with 8 years of relevant experiences.
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading technical teams.
  • Experience working technologies including more than one in the following areas:
    • Shell scripting (e.g., bash, ksh) in a Linux environment
    • Programming Languages: Fortran, C, C++, Perl, Python
    • Parallel programming: MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, CUDA, HIP, Kokkos, RAJA
    • Software deployment and build systems (e.g., CMake, Spack)
    • Containers (e.g., singularity, docker, podman)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building and installing scientific software and other 3rd party software applications on HPC systems
  • Experience with HPC schedulers and resource managers
  • Experience implementing scientific software on HPC systems
  • Experience developing and completing tests on HPC systems
  • Experience developing scientific software on GPU-based HPC systems
  • Experience with container technologies (e.g., singularity, docker)
  • Experience applying machine learning frameworks on HPC systems
  • Experience writing user documentation
  • Experience developing and delivering training for users
  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintains the highest level of professionalism at all times when interacting with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrates a high-energy, positive attitude and commitment to delivering a robust environment to NCCS users
  • Contributes to a positive team environment within the center by demonstrating a strong work ethic, effectively communicating with others, and proactively anticipating center and user needs
  • Experience coordinating and running HPC support teams
  • Understanding of the requirements of a DOE, DoD, and/or NSF HPC center
