Overview:
The Enrichment Systems Fabrication and Demonstration section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Group Leader for the Stable Isotope Production Facility (SIPF) Demonstration Group. This group is focused on the demonstration and operation of new gas centrifuge technology.The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies, and exploring enriched stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists, engineers, technical professionals, and technicians with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. This position reports to the Enrichment Systems Fabrication and Demonstration Section Head.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the group that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture.
- Lead group by setting, implementing, and modeling standards for performance of work consistent with environment, safety, security, health, and quality requirements and business rules, and ensuring a diverse and inclusive work environment.
- The Group Leader leads a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global leadership in their field, nurtures ORNL’s culture among group members, and continues to build and scale up individual excellence and impact.
- The Group Leader reports to and works closely with the Section Head to implement the group’s mission; develops group members to enable their career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel; performs and/or supports R&D to advance the field of knowledge or technology in one’s respective specialty.
- The SIPF Demonstration Group Leader will be responsible for recruiting and leading a team of enrichment technicians execute the commissioning, startup and ultimately the full scale production operations of the Stable Isotopes Production Facility.
- This will include conducting demonstration testing, supporting the transition to operations plan, preparing procedural documentation of operations, preparing maintenance plans within scope, developing and executing training, ensuring lab space readiness, and ensuring best practices and continuous improvements such as Lean Six Sigma tools are implemented.
- Once the full planned capability is achieved, this group will move to the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) and will be responsible for the ongoing manufacturing of enriched stable isotopes.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Provide leadership and implementation strategy for group programs and projects
- Attract, develop, motivate, and retain staff.
- Assist with acquisition of needed resources and capabilities.
- Collaborate with other line and program managers to assemble the best available project teams and technical resources for each project.
- Collaborate with other line and program managers in proposal development as necessary.
- Review and provide input to staff’s proposals as necessary.
- Lead group/program performance in the completion of assigned tasks and projects consistent with expectations and in support of the Lab Agenda.
- Be the technical leader resource for group members when issues arise.
- Ensure the quality of products and services meet customer requirements.
- Ensure work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with laboratory policies, standards, and procedures
Basic Qualifications
- This position requires a B.S. in science, engineering, or technical operations with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience
- Qualified candidates will have demonstrated experience in successfully leading diverse technical teams to accomplish project goals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with proven ability to successfully interact with internal and external project stakeholders
- Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
- A thorough understanding of manufacturing processes & supply chain management
- Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required
- Shift work, flexible hours and overtime are required
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active DOE Q clearance
- Experience related to programs or research involving isotope enrichment technologies
- Experience with start-up of new processes or operations
- Experience with DOE safety, security, and regulatory requirements
- NQA-1 or ISO-9000 Quality experience
This position is a full-time staff position.
