We are seeking a Group Leader for Verification Technologies in the Nonproliferation Science and Engineering (S&E) Section of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division. Our group is dedicated to providing verification solutions for use in monitoring nuclear materials and facilities for domestic accountancy applications, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, bilateral arm control treaties, and others. We also focus on radiation inspection system S&E and have recognized expertise in supporting advanced reactor safeguards and in the development of technologies and systems for inspector use. The group has been an instrumental part in multiple technologies deployed to the IAEA.
The GL reports to and works closely with the Section Head to implement scientific vision, develop group members to enable their career advancement, and steward capabilities, enabling ORNL programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology. They nurture ORNL’s culture among group members and continue to build both group and individual excellence and impact in R&D. They are expected to be an active researcher within the field.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Initiate, lead and perform independent and impactful R&D on an ongoing basis.
- Lead program development activities through sponsor engagements, preparation of proposals and whitepapers, participation in workshops, etc.
- Develop a vision and implement a cohesive research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success.
- Exercise scientific integrity in proposing, performing, and communicating research and ensuring all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies,standards, and procedures.
- Exemplify a commitment to excellence in research, operations, and community engagement. Work cooperatively to leverage scientific capabilities across ORNL.
- Advance the reputation and standing of the group as a whole through establishing collaborations, professional society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.

Basic Qualifications:
- PhD in engineering, scientific, nonproliferation, or related field and six (6) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience writing successful proposals to government agencies in the area of national security, lead national security projects as principal investigator and make significant technical contributions to projects.
- Experience leading R&D teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting the professional development of research staff, growing a world-class research program, initiating new research directions and strong team building capability.
- Extensive knowledge of practices and technologies associated with domestic nuclear material control and accounting, international safeguards, and/or arms control treaty verification.
- Experience developing and transferring technologies or techniques for operational use.
- Experience in the fields of nuclear nonproliferation, counterproliferation, or intelligence as it pertains to the nuclear fuel cycle.
- Demonstrated track record of research and development leadership in national and/or international engagements that seek to sustain and strengthen the national security community.
- Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D organizations).
- Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, good organizational skills, and outstanding written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to present scientific results to sponsors and technical communities, as well as professional society conferences and workshops.

- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
