Overview: 

We are seeking a senior isotope ratio mass spectrometry scientist who will focus on the performance of ultra-trace high precision analyses of gas by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) with an emphasis on nuclear and environment samples. The individual should be well versed in current gas collection methods as well as IRMS technologies and techniques in order to provide leadership in the development of existing programs as well identifying and pursuing future opportunities. This position resides in the Chemical and Isotope Mass Spectrometry (CIMS) group in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) Section which resides in the Chemical Science Division (CSD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will be responsible for the development and growth of the CIMS group’s IRMS projects and programs as well as the conduct of high precision characterizations of a wide variety of gaseous materials. This will include the development of gas handling methodologies, purification and separation protocols, and measurement protocols. As a senior researcher you will focus on the expansion of laboratories capabilities to support domestic and international partners and collaborate with other ORNL science and technical professionals working in isotope programs.   

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and grow the CIMS group’s IRMS capabilities and technologies for isotope and forensic programs.
  • Participate in the development of novel analytical methodologies and infrastructure for gas isotope ratio analyses. 
  • Synergistic interactions with a variety of subject matter experts working in DOE’s scientific communities related to the production of and scientific studies for the chemical and physical properties of isotopes.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Geology, Chemistry, Oceanography, Physics or a related discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong publication record in IRMS
  • Expertise in gas sample collection, manipulation, cleanup, and analysis. Experience with xenon analysis is a plus.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.  

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
