We are seeking a Systems Engineering and Integration Lead to run the design and integration for the LEGEND-1000 project. The LEGEND-1000 Project plans to construct a ~350T liquid argon cryostat and populate it with 1000 kg of enriched Ge detectors in an effort to observe neutrinoless double beta decay. In this role, you will work closely with an international project team to deliver the LEGEND-1000 experiment. This position resides in the LEGEND-1000 Project Office in our Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


In this role, you will support project management by establishing bases for informed decision making and verifying that the production experiment meets the needs of the end-users. You'll do this by ensuring that the LEGEND-1000 design conforms to the end-user requirements, engineering criteria, integrated controls, and engineering and laboratory interfaces and meets applicable standards for safety and quality. As part of this international project team, you will also provide designs, procurement support, installation support, and testing support. You will establish, and keep current, an integrated basis for design, support the development of a basis for safety and quality, ensure consistency and interoperability across all subsystems and components through documentation, configuration management, and work controls.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to build a success-oriented project culture.

  • Coordinate technical and engineering aspects of the project scope.

  • Lead the experiment’s technical interfaces and requirements.

  • Handle risks associated with the design, materials and components, transportation, assembly, and installation of the experiment.

  • Lead designers and engineers to produce designs, analyses, drawings, specifications, and other design-related deliverables.

  • Develop a design maturation plan that clearly shows the internal and external assessments of design maturity for components and subsystems that lead to a robust and complete final design.

  • Coordinate engineering design reviews covering all subsystems and components.

  • Establish configuration control to manage and keep current the project’s engineering documents including, but not limited to:

    • Interface control documents covering the full LEGEND technical scope across the experiment’s facilities, cryogenics, process flow hardware, electronics, instrumentation, materials, simulations, and analyses.

    • System requirements and performance criteria documents

    • Design and Analysis Calculations (DACs)

    • 3-D CAD models

    • Hardware drawings

    • Technical Specifications

    • Statements of Work

    • Installation Plans

    • Test Plans

  • Ensure that the scope of work on major project procurements is technically complete and meets the functionality, performance, cost, and schedule requirements.

  • Develop strong working relationships across the project with scope managers, subject material experts, vendors, and project support organizations including Environment, Safety, Health, Quality Assurance, Procurement, and Project Controls.

  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Assurance requirements.

  • Ensure alignment with DOE Order 413.3b as it pertains to the systems engineering, design management, and project controls.

  • Present project information at reviews.

Basic Qualifications:

A BS degree in science or engineering with at least 8 years of engineering experience; a MS and 7 years of experience, or a PhD and 4 years of experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience applying systems engineering principles to complex technical projects

  • Experience working with low-background physics projects.

  • Prior experience in the design, fabrication, and installation of large scientific experiments.

  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and vendors to deliver complex scientific instruments.

  • Knowledge of DOE Order 413.3b.

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and EPDM for CAD design and document control.

  • Demonstrated ability to draw on knowledge and solid judgment to make quality decisions in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and manage vendors, partners, and project team members.

  • Excellent inter-personal skills with the ability to build highly functional teams and to build trust among a diverse set of team members.

  • A sense of personal responsibility, dependability, and commitment to meet expected outcomes.

  • Openness and a degree of flexibility.
