Overview:    

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician who will focus on providing technical support and oversight of scientific laboratory spaces for neutron scattering researchers and technicians.  The laboratory technician will enable researchers to safely access lab space and equipment to benefit neutron scattering experiments.  Additionally, the qualified candidate will support sample management functions within the division to enable researchers to perform experiments.  This position resides in the Labs and Soft Matter Group in the Sample Environment and Labs Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).    

  

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Under general supervision provide technical support for the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) User Laboratories and sample management. 

  • Performs basic laboratory housekeeping, ordering and organization. 

  • Interacts constantly with internal and external users of the laboratories.  

  • Provides training, service and assistance to users with diverse backgrounds. 

  • Works within ORNL and NScD databases/systems to ensure compliance and tracking of laboratory activities. 

  • Works as an integral part of the flow of chemicals and samples into and out of the division. This includes ordering, receiving, storing, inventory, tracking, shipping, and waste/recyclables collection and categorization. 

  • Acts as custodian for laboratory instrumentation ensuring calibration, maintenance, and condition. 

  • Maintains strong commitment to customer service. 

  • Writes and implements Hazard Analyses. 

  • Reads and understands Safety Data Sheets. 

  • Identifies and appropriately works with a variety of chemical and equipment hazards.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Associates degree in a scientific or technical discipline and a minimum of two years of experience. 

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience can be considered in lieu of degree. 

  • Competent user of various types of software such as office automation, databases, and web applications. 

  • Familiarity with basic chemistry. 

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.  

 

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). 

  • Previous experience working with radiological samples and controls. 

  • History of working within a QMS, ISO, or GMP environment. 

  • Experience calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment. 

  • Experience supporting technical staff, including scientists. 

  • Experience handling, tracking, and shipping samples. 

  • Experience working with Department of Transportation regulations. 

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.  

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.  

 

Special Requirements:  

  • This position requires some physical activity, such as carrying lightweight items, etc. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer. 

  • This position requires Rad Worker II training.  

  • Visa sponsorship is not available.
