Overview:

The Laboratory Protection Division (LPD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Locksmith to work as part of a cross-functional team responsible for supporting the protection of classified matter, special nuclear material, departmental assets, government property and personnel. The Locksmith is responsible for the implementation of the ORNL Lock and Key Program requirements to maintain accountability and integrity of ORNL locking systems as well as compliance with applicable DOE Orders. This position resides in the Physical Security Team in the Security Programs Group, Laboratory Protection Division, Facilities and Operations Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Administer the ORNL Key and Lock Program to ensure accountability and integrity of institutional locking systems.
  • Ensure program compliance with applicable DOE orders (e.g., DOE O 473.1A) and ORNL procedures; support internal/external surveys, assessments, and corrective actions.
  • Support development and maintenance of ORNL procedures within the Standards-Based Management System (SBMS) and related internal work instructions.
  • Install and maintain locking systems that protect special nuclear material (SNM), classified matter, and government property in accordance with DOE requirements.
  • Determine appropriate lock types and protection levels using a graded approach; recommend upgrades as needed.
  • Procure, pin/combine, assemble, and maintain lock cores; perform rekeying and key duplication consistent with key control requirements.
  • Process key/lock returns and perform refurbishment, reissue, or disposition actions per policy.
  • Maintain the KeyWeb key control and accountability system (issuance, return, transfers, records retention) for keys, cores, and related components.
  • Maintain current and archived records for key assignments and core locations; ensure data integrity and required documentation.
  • Ensure and document annual key/lock inventories; investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Provide day-to-day KeyWeb and key control support to employees and designated approvers; deliver user guidance as needed.
  • Document business rules and workflow requirements; coordinate with IT to implement, test, and deploy KeyWeb updates.
  • Support planning, lifecycle reviews, and supply procurement for key/lock program needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS degree in security management, criminal justice, or other related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in locksmithing or safeguards and security related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in DOE safeguards and security operations is desired, as well as database management.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills (verbal and written) are preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Recognized locksmith certification (e.g., ALOA, SAVTA)
  • Active DOE security clearance.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
