Overview:
The Design Services Group within the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is seeking a Mid-level Mechanical Designer who will focus on developing and improving designs of technical systems associated with the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) including subsystems, instrumentation, power, components and assemblies, and/or the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) instrument suite. In this role, you will create CAD models and detailed fabrication packages, integrate system designs, resolve technical issues, and collaborate with engineers and analysts to provide geometry and technical information in required formats. You will also apply new software and processes to improve design efficiency.
This position reports to the Design Services Group Leader in the NTD, NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Collaborate with a diverse team to bring complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and use.

Create engineering drawings and digital product definition data using computer-aided design (historically Creo).

Identify and resolve model, design, and interface problems together with system lead engineers.

Provide insights for designing for quality fabrication.

Convert multi-CAD system subassemblies (Creo, AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, etc.).

Produce multi-component installation drawings and specifications.

Prepare clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.

Meet milestones set by SNS/IE management, e.g. budget and schedule.

Basic Qualifications:

An AS degree in an engineering field with at least 5 years of experience in design of complex mechanical systems.

A high school diploma may be considered with additional relevant experience.

Experience using 3D CAD modeling package.

Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Experience using Creo.
-
Experience with Windchill for data management.

Experience with machine shop interaction and machinability.

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Familiarity with ASME Y14.5-2018 standards, and how to interpret/apply GD&T.
