Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 4707

Overview:

We are seeking an outstanding Senior R&D Staff Member with a strong instrumentation background to help Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) extend its world leading reputation and capabilities in collider physics to lead the development of proposed upgrades of experiments at the Large Hadron Collider and lead the design and construction of major subsystems for a detector at the future Electron Ion Collider. Areas and technologies envisioned for our efforts are 5D-calorimetry and silicon-based tracking and timing detectors. This position is a full-time position based on-site at ORNL and resides in the Relativistic Nuclear Physics Group, Fundamental Nuclear & Particle Physics Section, Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The Physics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has a strong track record in developing advanced radiation detectors and instrumentation for particle and nuclear physics experiments and for national security applications. The Division is a world-leader in non-destructive imaging for basic science and is currently collaborating on the ALICE experiment at the LHC, where it has recently completed the construction of the readout of the upgrade of the Time Projection Chamber and contributed to the construction of the ALICE Inner Tracker System based on the monolithic active pixel sensor technology. A future strong role in the Electron Ion Collider and various upgrades at the LHC are being targeted. As a Senior R&D Staff Member, you’ll provide leadership within ORNL and within the scientific community in the analysis and publication of physics results from on-going experiments, operation of existing experimental systems, and development of detectors and physics programs for future experiments.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assume a major leadership role in the design, proposal, funding, development, and construction of new experiments and new detector systems for experiments at the LHC and the Electron Ion Collider, building strong relationships with other members and institutions and managing major tasks within the project.
  • Lead the investigation and development of proposed agendas for future research initiatives
  • Lead the design and construction of major subdetectors for future experiments
  • Guide and manage physics analysis team efforts on existing experiments
  • Work closely with the Engineering Team of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate in the area of ASIC design.
  • Be a strong advocate for our overall program, effectively leveraging ORNL expertise in detector physics and project management.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
  • Work across the Division and the Directorates at the laboratory to grow the overall ORNL Physics science program.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in collider experimental physics
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of instrumentation for particle and nuclear physics experiments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An excellent record of highly productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated capability and familiarity in planning, coordination, and management of medium-to-large-scale experimental physics projects
  • Demonstrated expertise with semi-conductor detector technologies in particular monolithic active pixel sensors and low-gain avalanche diodes.
  • Knowledge of large-system integration
  • Strong collaborative skills working with ASIC and Electronics engineers.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work closely with and help lead a large international collaboration
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to set and manage priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to changing requirements
