Postdoc- Mechanical Behavior and Microstructural Evolution of Nuclear Ceramic
Date: Jul 21, 2025
Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830
Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Requisition Id 15126
Overview:
We are seeking a postdoctoral candidate who will investigate the mechanical behavior of irradiated nuclear ceramics through advanced characterization techniques and computations relevant to the development of strategic nuclear performance codes for nuclear reactors. This position resides in the Radiation Effects and Microstructural Analysis Group (REMAG) in the Materials in Extremes Section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The selected individual will mainly perform research on irradiated materials at ORNL’s Irradiated Material Examination and Testing (IMET) facility and Low Activation Materials Development and Analysis (LAMDA) Laboratory.
Candidate is expected to bridge x-ray or neutron characterization techniques with mechanical behavior and finite element methods. The postdoctoral candidate will develop the processes needed to connect mechanical testing data with 3D microstructure of nuclear ceramics, leading to incorporation into robust nuclear performance codes for nuclear reactors. Candidate will perform/analyze mechanical testing of irradiated ceramics, finite element computations, 3D characterizations, and models that are suitable for nuclear fuel performance codes.
Knowledge and experience of x-ray computed tomography, mechanical testing, and finite element modelling is desirable.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform experimental research on effects of neutron irradiation on mechanical properties of nuclear ceramics and composites
- Conduct detailed examinations of neutron irradiated materials by scanning electron microscopy or x-ray tomography
- Analyze experimental data to investigate mechanisms of irradiation- and mechanically- induced damage
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
- Participate in the development of new ideas and projectsDeliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong background in computational and image processing software
- Knowledge of in situ neutron and x-ray scattering/tomography techniques for materials examination
- Experience with complex mechanical testing of materials
- Flexibility to adapt evolving research scope and programmatic needs
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
