Apply now »

Date: Dec 15, 2018

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 215

Overview:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on on the growth of thin film and heterostructured quantum materials utilizing a combination of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Specifically, focus will be on the development and characterization of emergment phenomena by controlling symmetry and dimensionality in heterostructures of strongly correlated oxide phases with Dirac materials, Weyl semimetals, tological insulators, etc. This will include preforming characterization in a unique, state-of-the-art laboratory to study the structure, electronic structure, and magnetic state; and access to synchrotron and neutron scattering national user facilities, both onsite at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (the Spallation Neutron Source, High Flux Isotope Reactor) and those at other Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. This will be a highly collaborative position residing in the Quantum Heterostructures Group in the Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
•    Synthesize thin films materials by molecular beam epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition
•    Characterizate structural, magnetic and electronic properties utilizing four-circle X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS), Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES), synchrotron X-ray diffraction/Spectroscopy, and neutron scattering
•    Lead user proposals to gain access to DOE-funded user facilities
•    Disemenate of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences
•    Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

•    A PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related science discipline completed within the last 5 years

Preferred Qualifications:
•    Strong background in either low temperature transport measurements, or photoemission spectroscopy with experience in the synthesis of either thin film growth by molecular beam epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, or bulk single crystals
•    A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience
•    Familiarity with numerical data analysis and customization of control software (Labview)
•    Experience with the use of XRD, PPMS, SQUID, ARPES, scanning probes, soft x-rays, and neutrons

Special Requirement:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
