Overview:  

The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Radiological Instrumentation Technician within the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group. ORNL is a world leader in advanced science and technology research involving several nonreactor nuclear facilities, accelerators, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor which involve a complex range of internal and external radiological hazards that are managed to protect more than 3,000 researchers and operations staff involved in the Nuclear Research and Isotope Production Mission. The Radiological Protection Instrumentation staff is responsible for evaluation, deployment, and calibration of radiological instrumentation as an essential part of the ORNL Radiological Protection Program. The primary focus of this position is to perform NIST traceable calibrations of portable and stationary instruments, electronic dosimeters, and provide support and guidance on instrument use in support of the ORNL Radiological Instrumentation program.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

Under general supervision, perform a variety of technical tasks in a safe and reliable manner, in full compliance with all procedurals, work control, and regulatory requirements.  Primary duties may include any or all the following:

  • Perform National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibrations of radiological protection instruments

  • Provide NIST-traceable irradiations of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs)

  • Aid in the development and revision of procedures and technical documents for the calibration and use of radiological protection instruments

  • Assist with instrumentation upgrade initiatives and implementation strategies

  • Provide troubleshooting on issues involving portable and stationary radiological instruments

  • Provide support to vendors performing onsite instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS degree in a science related or technical field with at least two years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Prior experience working with the calibration and testing of stationary and portable radiological protection instrumentation

  • Working knowledge of ANSI N323 requirements

  • Excellent verbal/written communication, computer, and proven teamwork skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

  • Competency in Word, excel, and system applications

 

Special Requirements:

  • Physical requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
