Research Associate - Computational Condensed Matter Physics
Date: Nov 18, 2025
Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830
Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Requisition Id 15618
Overview:
We are seeking a Computational Condensed Matter Physicist who will perform state-of-the-art numerical simulations of quantum magnets (i.e., quantum spin systems). Research will focus on dynamic and out-of-equilibrium signatures of emergent physics that are observable in both materials experiments and quantum simulations. Active collaborations with experimental and quantum computing efforts will be critical.
This position resides in the Materials Theory Group, Foundational and Quantum Materials Science Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and is supported by the Quantum Science Center, a Department of Energy (DOE) National Quantum Information Science Research Center. In this multi-institutional cross-disciplinary center, the successful candidate will engage with a network of universities, national laboratories, and industrial partners to develop a scientific ecosystem for fault-tolerant quantum-accelerated high-performance computing (QHPC).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform state-of-the-art numerical computations of quantum spin systems using, e.g., tensor network and/or quantum Monte Carlo approaches to explore emergent physics and benchmark quantum simulations.
- Actively collaborate with other researchers in the Quantum Science Center, including scientists at ORNL, other national laboratories, as well as academic and industrial partners.
- Present and report key research results and publish them in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in computational condensed matter physics or other closely related field.
- A minimum of two years of experience with numerical methods in quantum many-body physics, e.g., tensor network and/or quantum Monte Carlo approaches.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with quantum magnetism (e.g., quantum spin liquids and/or quantum critical spin systems).
- Experience with writing high-quality code.
- Excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Letters of Recommendation:
Please submit three letters of reference when applying to this position. You may upload these directly to your application or have them sent to psdrecruit@ornl.gov.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
- Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
- To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
- If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
- Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
