­­Overview:  

We are seeking an early-career Research Associate who will focus on supporting existing research efforts related to front-end uranium chemical processing through experimentation and theoretical modeling.  This position resides in the Collection Science and Engineering Group in the Modeling & Characterization Section, Nuclear Nonproliferation Division, National Security Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Support process model development for uranium and plutonium chemical processing unit operations via software and documentation development
• Perform relevant experiments required for process model development and validation
• Assist in the development and implementation of key unit operations associated with the nuclear fuel cycle for future research and development efforts

Basic Qualifications:

• MS degree in chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline
• The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance from the Department of Energy

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with programming languages such as python, Fortran, or C++
• Experience working in a radiological laboratory setting
• Basic knowledge of uranium chemical processing and the nuclear fuel cycle
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements: 

• Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
