Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Research Technician to join the High Pressure Sample Environment Group. This position resides in the Sample Environment and Labs Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The successful candidate will provide essential technical support to help achieve the group's vision: “to be the global leader in high-pressure neutron science through our commitment to providing an unparalleled user experience while enabling complex experiments with the highest standards of safety and reliability.” In this role, you will work closely with Scientific Associates and Engineers to build, maintain, and stage the critical equipment used at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). You will be the hands-on force ensuring our equipment is ready, safe, and reliable for every user.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
As a mid-level technician, your primary focus is on the physical preparation, maintenance, and operation of equipment. Your core responsibilities include:

Perform precision assembly of high-pressure sample cells, intensifiers, and gas-handling systems according to engineering drawings and standard operating procedures.

Assist with the installation of sample environments onto neutron beamlines. Perform leak testing, and integration into greater sample environments, e.g., cryostats and closed-cycle refrigerators.

Conduct preventive maintenance on hydraulic pumps, compressors, and vacuum systems. Troubleshoot mechanical failures and perform repairs to minimize downtime. Inspect pressure cells before and after use to ensure their readiness.

Maintain a clean and organized workshop environment. Manage inventory of spare parts, fittings, and consumables to ensure operational readiness.

Accurately record maintenance logs, test results, and equipment status in the relevant systems.

Adhere strictly to safety protocols, including pressure safety standards. Participate in pre-job briefings and safety reviews.
Basic Qualifications:
-
An AS degree in a mechanical, electromechanical, or engineering technology field and 5+ years of relevant experience. A high school diploma will be considered in lieu of degree with at least 7+ years of relevant experience.

Proficiency with standard hand and power tools, and the ability to read mechanical drawings or schematics.

Must be capable of responding to urgent requests and willing to work a flexible schedule when required to support a 24/7 user facility.

Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including frequently climbing stairs/ladders, working in confined beamline spaces, and lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Experience assembling or maintaining hydraulic, pneumatic, and gas-handling systems (e.g., Swagelok or similar tube fitting experience).

Experience with electronics/electrical devices, i.e., soldering and wiring skills, use of multimeter.

Basic machine shop experience (drill press, band saw, etc.).

Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel/Word) for data entry and logging.

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
