Overview:   

We are seeking a Scientific Software Developer who will focus on developing and maintaining scientific software and data infrastructure, creating machine learning-based analysis workflows, and providing training and support to staff and users.  This position resides in the Data NanoAnalytics (DNA) group in the Theory and Computation Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our team, you will work directly with DNA/CNMS staff to gain experience in developing and implementing solutions on synthesis and characterization platforms, as well as incorporating machine learning algorithms at the edge, to create workflows that enable discovering fundamental insights into materials composition-processing-structure-property relationships. You will also interact closely with theory and simulation colleagues at CNMS to implement theory-experimental matching on-the-fly with integrated feedback to both theory and experiments to enable rapid optimization on those platforms and to improve mechanistic insights. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain and improve existing codebases used by staff and users
  • Support integration efforts at the CNMS to enable autonomous experimental workflows
  • Develop and apply data analysis and/or machine learning workflows for users
  • Provide training and support for users and staff on aspects of data analysis and use of computational resources available at ORNL

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline with at least five years of experience; a Master’s in the same areas with four years; or a PhD in the same areas
  • Experience in computer programming and software development
  • Experience with Git and Python

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A record of Python programming contributions verifiable on an online code repository (GitHub, GitLab, etc.)
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Experience with popular deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and JAX
  • Experience with common software development practices (continuous integration workflows, unit tests, etc.)
  • Basic Linux/Unix experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
