Overview:
The Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group within Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) is seeking a professional to support the radiological specialty measurements program. ORNL is a world leader in advanced science and technology research involving several nonreactor nuclear facilities, accelerators, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor which involve a complex range of internal and external radiological hazards that are managed to protect researchers and operations staff involved in the Nuclear Research and Isotope Production Mission. This role ensures reliable operation of stack monitoring systems through calibrations, troubleshooting, audits, technical documentation, and life-cycle planning, while serving as a subject matter expert and supporting emergency response and incident investigations. All work is performed in compliance with ORNL’s requirements and core values of safety, integrity, teamwork, and service.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support the day-to-day operation of the radiological effluent stack monitoring program to ensure continued and reliable operation.
- Perform system calibrations, validations, and verifications.
- Maintain equipment and troubleshoot/investigate instrumentation faults and alarms.
- Participate in audits, inspections, verifications, and surveillances.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for radiological effluent stack monitoring while interacting with various organizations throughout ORNL.
- Develop technical basis documents, technical evaluations, operational procedures, and other reports.
- Develop equipment life-cycle schedule/plan.
- Support development and perform calculations to support growing/evolving needs for existing and new radiological stack monitoring systems as required.
- Serve on the ORNL Emergency Operations Center support Team.
- Participate in incident/accident investigations of potential radiological releases.
- Support other activities in the NMAS Organization as needed.
- Guide and mentor junior staff.

Basic Qualifications:
- BS degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related technical field.
- 5 or more years of professional experience in health physics, nuclear engineering, nondestructive assay, or operational radiation protection.
- Demonstrated experience with nuclear measurements and gamma spectroscopy applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a technical science discipline or engineering with a concentration in health physics with 4 or more years of experience.
- Advanced computing skills, including data reduction, analysis, and presentation.
- Experience with spectroscopic radiological effluent monitors and other advanced radiological instrumentation.
- Knowledge of Mirion’s Genie, In-situ Object Counting System (ISOCS), and Horizon software applications.
- Working knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and principles of airborne radioactivity monitoring.
- Excellent organization, communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to interface with technical staff, auditors, regulators, and customers from varied disciplines and backgrounds.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
