Overview: 

This position will serve as the technical advisor to the Bethel Valley Hot Cell facilities within Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD). This position has multiple roles including Safety Basis Implementation, Radioactive Material Inventory Tracking and Evaluation, serving as the facility Material Balance Area Representative (MBAR), and Conduct of Operations Implementation. The Safety Basis documents are Department of Energy (DOE) approved documents that govern the operation of our nuclear facilities and failure to comply with the requirements can result in reportable occurrences and fines for the organization. Many of these activities impact multiple NNFD facilities.  In addition to these duties, this position may serve as the Facility Manager and Operations Group Lead liaison for conducting assessments and developing corrective actions for inventory related requirements.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review any relevant changes to the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), develop implementing actions, and track the actions to completion via an approved implementation process.
  • Coordinate the development of safety software and software QA requirements for the inventory control systems including transportation activities, radioactive material inventory, fissionable material inventory, and accountable nuclear material inventory.
  • Continuously improve accounting strategies and inventory tracking programs to ensure facility inventory is accurately maintained.
  • Screen inventory transfers, forecast future inventory changes, make recommendations on acceptance of materials, and provide process knowledge to assign inventory data values to outgoing radioactive materials.
  • Maintain records and control ledgers in accordance with stringent nuclear material accounting principles to accurately reflect the inventory on hand by number of discrete pieces, material type, material form, radioisotope, container information, and location.
  • Serve as the facility MBAR and serve as the primary point of contact with Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMC&A) staff to oversee the MBA.
  • Perform Physical Inventory, Inventory Reconciliation, and other NMC&A assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with the DSA, investigate issues that arise within the facility, propose recommended implementing/corrective actions to the facility management team, and track the actions to completion.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of relevant nuclear related experience. A comparable or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.
  • Experience in scheduling and prioritization of research tasks and strong customer service skills.
  • Exceptional teamwork skills, computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word), organizational skills, and strong personal motivation with the ability to adjust to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of operations staff, research professionals, and technicians.
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Nuclear Engineering
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Safety Basis documentation and associated controls (specifically nuclear inventory control).
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Criticality Safety and Nuclear Material Control and Accountability processes.
  • Strong familiarity with radioisotope symbology, chart of the nuclides, and relative isotopic hazards.
  • Ability to work as an active and contributing team member, manage time, and work independently with minimum oversight.
  • Active DOE Q Security Clearance
  • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks in a complex environment with attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Ability to handle potentially stressful situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

 

Special Requirements: 

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
