Overview:  

We are seeking a technical professional who will lead our laboratory experimental work.  This position resides in the Corrosion Science and Technology (CST) Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

As part of our research team, you will be responsible for building, upgrading and operating laboratory test equipment to simulate extreme environments in a safe, effective, and reproducible manner.  You will collaborate with researchers and technicians to ensure tasks are completed on time and on budget.  The position also requires coordinating with ORNL safety and craft personnel and supervisors to ensure that work is completed in a safe and timely manner.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Design, construct, maintain, operate, and improve unique research equipment and systems involving high temperature, high pressure and/or corrosive gases including steam, SCO2, simulated exhaust gases, liquid metals, molten salts, hydrogen, etc.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all laboratory research activities
  • Maintain and improve the corrosion database
  • Document and report experimental results in a timely manner
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies and equipment
  • Provide assistance in mentoring newly hired technicians
  • Effective verbal and written communication with all group members, students, and visitors
  • Professional interaction with craft personnel and supervisors to build and repair equipment to enable safe and timely operation
  • Ensure compliance with all environment, health, safety, and quality requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a related field

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing, building, and operating safely laboratory equipment to simulate extreme environments including high temperature, high pressure, corrosive salts, liquid metals and oxidizing and reducing gases
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar design software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
