Technician - Survey, Alignment, and Metrology Group

Overview: 
A technician on the Survey, Alignment, and Metrology group is responsible for using high-precision instruments to perform accurate, high-precision alignment and metrology on a wide variety of mechanical systems in support of the SNS accelerator systems and neutron beam lines.  These can be one-of-a-kind or first-of-a-kind systems and frequently have unique alignment issues, often requiring innovative solutions. Position reports to the Survey, Alignment, and Metrology Group Lead.  Coordinates activities with personnel at all levels within NTD and other divisions within NScD.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Works with scientists, engineers, and technicians to achieve required alignment and mapping tolerances.
  • Performs precise and accurate measurements with instruments such as laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines, and CMM arms.
  • Maintains instruments and checks calibration.
  • Uses metrology software to transform coordinate systems and perform geometric best-fits.
  • Produces accurate and concise technical reports.
  • Accurately and reliably communicates technical status and performance to ORNL management.
  • Complies with ORNL environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.
     

Basic Qualifications:

  • AS in metrology, surveying, engineering, or related field
  • An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may be considered instead of an AS degree.
  • 2 or more years of relevant surveying, metrology, or engineering experience
  • Understanding of CAD models
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently are required
  • Must have the ability to function as part of a team consisting of scientific specialists, engineers, and technicians to meet project cost and schedule goals


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of relevant experience 
  • Experience with accelerators or neutron instruments
  • Experience with laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines, CMM arms, laser scanners, optical tooling equipmpent, calipers, micrometers, and other metrology tools
  • Familiarity with Spatial Analyzer, Geomagic, Cyclone, Verisurf or other DMIS software
  • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Programming/scripting ability
