Overview:
Oak Ridge National Lab is seeking a technician for the Survey, Alignment, and Metrology Group. In this role, you will be responsible for using high-precision instruments to perform accurate, high-precision alignment and metrology on a wide variety of mechanical systems in support of the SNS accelerator systems and neutron beam lines. These can be one-of-a-kind or first-of-a-kind systems and frequently have unique alignment issues, often requiring innovative solutions.
This position resides in the Survey, Alignment, and Metrology group in the Neutron Technologies Engineering Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Works with scientists, engineers and other technical staff to determine required alignment and mapping tolerances.
- Performs precise and accurate measurements with instruments such as laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines, and PCMM arms.
- Maintains instruments and checks calibration.
- Uses metrology software to transform coordinate systems and perform geometric best fits.
- Produces accurate and concise technical reports.
- Accurately and reliably communicates technical status and performance to ORNL management.
- Interpret mechanical drawings and check field installations and component dimensions against the drawings.
- Complies with ORNL environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.
- Produce written inspection reports.
- Build 3D CAD models from field data, such as large-volume laser scans.
- Setup, maintain, and document survey control networks.
- Provide field high-precision (micron level) alignment of equipment.

Basic Qualifications:
- An AS degree in metrology, surveying, engineering, design, or related field and 5 or more years of relevant surveying, metrology, or engineering experience.
- An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may be considered instead of an AS degree.
- Understanding of CAD models and engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (e.g., scientific specialists, engineers, and technicians) to meet defined project cost and schedule targets.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with accelerators or neutron instruments.
- Experience with laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines, PCMM arms, laser scanners, optical tooling equipment, calipers, micrometers, and other metrology tools.
- Familiarity with Spatial Analyzer, Geomagic, Cyclone, Verisurf, Polyworks or other metrology software.
- Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Experience performing large-volume laser scanning and/or building CAD models from large-volume scan data.
- Programming/scripting ability.
Special Requirements:
- Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
