US ITER Logistics and Transportation Specialist

Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

US ITER is a $6.5 Billion, Department of Energy multi-laboratory project that executes the United States (US) contributions to the ITER Project in France lead by the ITER International Organization (IO). The US is a non-host partner in the world’s largest and unprecedented scientific partnership as part of a seven-member international collaboration which includes the partner Domestic Agencies (DA’s) China, European Union, India, Japan, Korea, and Russia to design and construct a fusion nuclear reactor aimed at establishing the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy and support a pathway toward a zero-carbon society. The US ITER project is hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. Partner labs are Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates required logistics and transportation activities for specific shipments of US ITER high-technology equipment from various world-wide locations to the ITER Organization (IO) in France and other ITER members
  • Alongside US ITER Logistics and Transportation Coordinator (LTC), interfaces with IO and Logistics Service Provider (LSP) to develop and implement US ITER requirements, plans and protocols in regards to packaging, shipping, receiving, insurance, inspection, acceptance, storage and ownership transfer
  • Supports execution of the Global Transport and Logistics Basic Ordering Agreement:
    • Assists in Task Order preparation for shipments (e.g., Statement of Work development)
    • Evaluates transportation proposals to ensure a proper balance between cost, schedule, and risk
    • Prioritizes and expedites shipments as required
    • Ensures correct and timely submission of information and documentation
  • Complies with all applicable US and international laws and regulations related to import/export activities
  • Interfaces with US ITER/IO technical staff to understand/define hardware requirements, obtain necessary approvals, and issue Shipping Releases
  • Furthers development and maintenance of the US ITER Transportation Database
  • Assists US ITER LTC in providing transportation guidance to various organizations (e.g., US ITER Procurement, technical staff, partner labs, and vendors) and resolving their logistics issues

 

Qualifications Required:

  • B.S. in Business Administration (e.g., Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Transportation) or related field equivalent with a minimum two years of applicable work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • International logistics experience preferred
  • Strong MS Office skills required
  • Knowledge of Customs clearance protocols preferred, particularly in France
  • Occasional domestic and international travel may be required

  • Ability to work independently and proactively to solve daily complex issues

 

Work Directions and Interfaces:

  • Works under direction of the US ITER LTC
  • Works with US ITER Project Staff including Technical Staff, Procurement, and Project Controls
  • Works with ORNL Export Control and Property Management
  • Works with vendors and other national laboratories providing US ITER Hardware
  • Maintains active communications with IO Logistics Staff
