R&D Associate Staff - High Performance Multi-Phase Material Manufacturing

Purpose: 

We are seeking an R&D Associate Staff member who will focus on net-zero manufacturing and recyclability of wind energy, automotive, and aerospace application technologies. The candidate will conduct experimental research on recycling technology efficiencies and mechanisms of property degradation for recycled feedstocks for re-manufacturing with large-scale additive manufacturing and other industrial polymer processing methodologies. The staff will be expected to collaborate amongst groups focusing on basic and applied research in various fields applicable to the current projects. This position resides in the Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies Group in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Overview:  

As part of our research team, the candidate will advance the science of manufacturing innovative recyclable multi-functional hybrid composites for sustainable manufacturing. You will be performing research and development assessing best decommissioning practices and of end of life management strategies for critical materials informed by life cycle and techno-economic analysis. Your work will involve characterization, modeling, manufacturing demonstration articles, and test samples. You will be expected to simultaneously execute multiple projects, contribute to developing new initiatives in your area, and interact with ORNL staff and industry and academic partners. The successful candidate will lead and support research advancing state of the art in the area of recycling polymer composite technologies and novel bio-based composites and demonstrating manufacturability; publish original peer-reviewed research articles; and supervise students, postdocs technicians, and staff.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Execute projects in the area of design for recycling,  
  • Contribute to the development of new initiatives in the area of additive manufacturing of high performance
  • Improve design for recycling aspect of products and end-of-life recyclability.
  • Secure and maintain world-class equipment for the manufacturing of materials
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and industrial partners, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years or more work/research experience
  • Research experience with state-of-the-art methods and technologies for net-zero manufacturing and recyclability of wind energy technologies (utility and distributed)
  • Experience with recycling technology efficiencies and mechanisms of property degradation for recycled feedstocks for re-manufacturing
  • Experience with R&D involving industrial partners
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs

 

Work Direction and Interfaces:  Position reports to the Group Leader, Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies, in the Manufacturing Science Division and interfaces with administrative staff, managers, and visitors to ORNL.
