Overview:
We are seeking a Technician who will focus on supporting directed energy deposition/hybrid manufacturing research. This position resides in the Manufacturing Systems design group in the Manufacturing Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The main function of this position is to support the Manufacturing Systems Design Group and affiliated groups with a focus on developing new manufacturing processes, integration of new capabilites into existing machine tools, and operation and troubleshooting with a specific focus towards hybrid manufacturing systems. The group efforts focus on building the science base for advanced manufacturing systems and translating those results into innovations for commercial and defense applications. Projects often integrate additive and subtractive operations, hardware and software, sensors, and data analysis. Projects will require creative solutions to challenging problems in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Ability to document manufacturing steps through writing and images on build reports utilizing Microsoft office

Generate and execute CNC programs to assist research projects

Set up tooling in machines for the fast execution of research projects

Assist with the install and operation of new machines within the identified working scope

Basic Qualifications:

Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes is required.

High school diploma / GED is required.

The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance is required.
Preferred Qualifications:

Excellent CNC and CAM software skills
-
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
-
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
-
Ability to identify points of need for daily operations and resupply such as consumable stock, maintenance schedules, research project execution, and system installation.

Ability to accurately and susinctly document standard operating procedures and improved techniques

Ability to teach others the basic operations of these complex systems
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
