Design, document, and implement OpenStudio/EnergyPlus models for evaluating single-family homes and mobile homes/manufactured housing. Write code in Python and/or Ruby to perform the simulations. Author Python and/or Ruby code to modify building descriptions to accommodate retrofit measures that should be assessed for applicability based on economic factors and potential for energy savings. In addition, combine multiple measures accounting for interactions between them.




The Building Technologies and Research Integration Center within the Energy Science and Transportation Directorate (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a Technical Associate Staff member position to work in the areas of residential building weatherization.


ORNL has been tasked by the DOE Weatherization Assistance Program to perform energy audits of single-family homes, manufactured homes, and mobile homes to determine cost effective retrofit measures that are compliant with the program. In the past, the energy audits were done using a variable-based degree day method to estimate energy savings and then perform a savings to investment ratio calculation to recommend measures compliant with the rules of the program. The current project seeks to replace the variable-based degree day method with a more precise audit using the OpenStudio/EnergyPlus whole building energy simulation software.



Major Duties/Responsibilities


The selected candidate will:

- Assist in the design, development, implementation, and testing of OpenStudio/EnergyPlus models to simulate energy use for single-family, manufactured homes, and mobile homes.

- Evaluate approved retrofit measures for the Weatherization Program and write code to implement them.

- Write code with interoperability of measures in mind to support the Weatherization Program.

- Implement economic calculations to enable comparison of measures and prioritize based on energy and cost savings to investment ratios.


Qualifications Required

The position requires:

  • A master’s degree in computer science or related discipline with 1 - 3 years relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree with 2 - 4 years relevant experience
  • Moderate to advanced experience in Python or Ruby. Experience with C++.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills to support team building, partnering, and regular interactions with sponsors, states, local weatherization agencies, and others.
  • Excellent written communication skills to collaborate on reports, proposals, publications, and journal articles.
  • The demonstrated ability to meet project schedules, scopes, and budgets.


Our work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, under the Building Technologies Office and the Weatherization Program within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
