Purpose

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a scientific leader with a national and international reputation and record of accomplishment to serve as the Director of Manufacturing Science Division (MSD). The MSD consist of three sections 1) Energy Efficient Manufacturing Science, 2) Precision Manufacturing and Machining, and 3) Secure and Digital Manufacturing. The Manufacturing Science Division focuses on the development and deployment of next generation advanced manufacturing technologies through research and scale-up of new materials and manufacturing processes enabling innovative energy materials, systems and products. The Division also stewards two of DOE’s world class manufacturing facilities—the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility—enabling “Placed Based Innovation”.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

• Provide technical and scientific leadership for the Division’s research programs and for maintaining the quality of research in the division.

• Establish new capabilities and provide sustainability and growth for applied user facilities that are foundational to the enduring missions of ORNL.

• Develop and maintain a healthy collaborative relationship with other national laboratories, colleges and universities, other research institutions, and public and private corporations.

• Drive commercialization activities through directorate business plans and strategies, as well as collaboration with industries locally and throughout the region.

• Foster initiatives for employee development through mentoring, performance, and succession planning.

• Create and nurture an environment that promotes and embraces a diverse workforce.

• Promote a culture of scientific excellence, while performing work in a safe and secure manner.

• Act as steward for laboratory operations, facilities, capital, and equipment. Direct line management responsibilities for the Manufacturing Science Division.

 

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in an engineering or scientific discipline relevant to manufacturing and/or materials science and engineering and a recognized record of research accomplishments in that field, plus 15 years of relevant experience is required.

• Recognized national and international reputation and record of accomplishment in a discipline relevant to the Division’s research and demonstrated experience with technical/scientific management and development is required.

• Ability to interact effectively with funding agencies, such as DOE, and demonstrated ability to initiate substantial new research efforts and collaborations is required.

• Demonstrated technical and strategic leadership ability applicable to running a large, diverse, team-oriented organization with a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists is required.

• Demonstrated experience in effective management and administrative oversight, creativity in decision making and problem solving, and a commitment to mentoring and career development.

 

Requirements

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
