Overview:

The Energy Systems Analytics (ESA) group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts applied machine learning and decision science research and development for energy applications. To support ORNL strategic R&D activities in advanced manufacturing, we are seeking candidates to fill multiple Energy Systems Analyst positions. The selected candidates will work at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF - https://www.ornl.gov/facility/mdf/) to develop in collaboration with members of the MDF Data Analytics team algorithms, scripts, and data analytics techniques to analyze multidimensional manufacturing data.

Purpose:

The MDF Data Analytics team is developing software and methods to collect and to analyze data coming from state-of-the-art 3D printers and machining systems. In an Industry 4.0 environment like the MDF, manufacturing systems are heavy data producers. Information is collected at every step of the manufacturing process to create terabyte size multi-modal and spatiotemporal datasets that capture how each component was manufactured. As a research institution, we are using these data to gain a greater understanding of our systems and use this knowledge to find new ways to optimize manufacturing systems, to perform real time quality assessment, to implement feedback loop control and correction strategies, and ultimately to develop the next generation of systems. In this context, you will be working with a talented team of scientists and engineers on cutting edge R&D projects. Your role will be to develop the data analytics algorithms or artificial intelligence approaches to process these data in order to extract relevant information in support of our main optimization and control objectives. With over 100 systems at the MDF, you will have the possibility to work on very different projects and multiple opportunities to explore multiple facets of data science, and to grow your skillsets and career while having a measurable impact in the success of the MDF.

  • Frequently generate reports and presentations to communicate results and findings
  • Investigate machine learning and deep learning techniques
  • Read recent publications to stay current of latest AI research
  • Support R&D staff members on their projects
  • General support of research and development needs within the MDF

Basic Qualifications:
