Big Area Additive Manufacturing Research with the focus on arc/laser - based metal fusion.
Purpose
The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking an internationally recognized researcher to conduct projects, expand research, and assist in the development of projects to support the arc/laser welding -based metal additive manufacturing R&D portfolio.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
The selected candidate will:
- Conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in MIG and laser-based metal additive manufacturing
- Develop new control strategies for single arm deposition
- Develop control strategies for multi arm coordinated motion
- Develop new hardware and software framework for system monitoring and data acquisition
- Support efforts to improve the metal AM (Additive Manufacturing) process efficiency with focus on
- System integration
- Accuracy
- Mechanical properties
- Process thermal stability
- Test new methods and improvements with industrial application on the MDF metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing test bed.
- Mentor students and interns;
- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities;
- Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings.
Qualifications Required
The position requires:
A Master or MS in Mechanical Engineering with focus on controls/robotics/mechatronics with practical knowledge.
Basic programming skills C, C++, LabVIEW
Robot programming experience
Experience with wire arc or laser- based AM
Ability to directly apply scientific methods to solve engineering problems
Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building.
Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is required.
Frequent domestic travel and possibly international travel is expected in this position.
Some activities may require export control and/or national security interests. Therefore, U.S. citizenship is required.
Additional Qualifications Preferred
- Knowledge of CAD software
- Experience with industrial robots
- Understanding of the AM process and its challenges
- Experience with TIG/MIG or laser welding process
