Purpose

 

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the ­­­­Manufacturing Automation and Controls at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking a researcher to fill in significant technical roles within the R&D teams of projects focused on developing automation solutions towards complex biosystems studies and support of metal additive manufacturing R&D portfolio.

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

 

The selected candidate will:

- Conduct R&D projects developing automation solutions towards complex biosystems studies

- Design new system bio-robotics systems

- Develop control strategies for automation and robotization of greenhouse activities and plant DNA sequencing

-  Support Group’s other areas of research

  • Additive manufacturing  
  • Robotics
  • Automation

- Mentor students and interns

- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities

-  Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings

 

Qualifications Required

The position requires:

  • Master/MS degree in Mechanical Engineering with practical knowledge of robotics and manufacturing (design, engineering, controls, integration.
  • Experience and knowledge of CAD software
  • Experience in building robotics/automation systems for greenhouse applications
  • Robot programming experience/ Experience with industrial robots
  • Experience and understanding of additive manufacturing concepts
  • Ability to directly apply scientific methods to solve engineering problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building
  • Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is required
  • Frequent domestic travel and possibly international travel is expected in this position
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

 

Additional Qualifications Preferred

  • Basic programming skills C, C++, LabVIEW
  • Experience with wire arc or laser- based AM
  • Manufacturing experience
