Big Area Additive Manufacturing Research with the focus on arc/laser - based metal fusion.
Purpose
The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Manufacturing Automation and Controls at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking an internationally recognized researcher to conduct projects, expand research, and assist in the development of projects to support the arc/laser welding -based metal additive manufacturing R&D portfolio.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
The selected candidate will:
- Conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in MIG and laser-based metal additive manufacturing
- Design new robotic systems for AM
- Conduct R&D on new deposition head design
- Deposition rate improvement
- Integration of sensors and components
- Testing and verification of new systems
- Support efforts to improve the metal AM process efficiency with focus on
- System integration
- Process development
- High throughput
- Energy efficiency
- Test new methods and improvements with industrial application on the MDF metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing test bed.
- Mentor students and interns;
- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities;
- Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings.
Qualifications Required
The position requires:
A Master or MS in Mechanical Engineering with focus on design/robotics/mechatronics with practical knowledge.
Design of robotics systems
Robot programming experience
Experience with design of Direct Energy Deposition system design
High level kill sin computer aided design (CAD), Solidworks preferred
Ability to directly apply scientific methods to solve engineering problems
Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building.
Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is required.
Frequent domestic travel and possibly international travel is expected in this position.
Some activities may require export control and/or national security interests. Therefore, U.S. citizenship is required.
Additional Qualifications Preferred
- Basic programming
- Experience with industrial robots
- Understanding of the AM process and its challenges
- Experience with TIG/MIG or laser welding process
