Purpose:
The Electric Drives Research Group (EDR) Group of Propulsion Science Section in Buildings and Transportation Science Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for an associate R&D staff position to conduct research on power electronics and traction drives. The successful candidate will be capable of developing advanced thermal solutions to enable high power density electric traction drive as well experienced in structural and thermo-mechanical analysis to ensure reliable operation.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
- Conduct R&D projects and help the expansion of R&D to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities.
- Familiar with the state of the art in power electronics and motors for electric vehicles.
- Design and develop advanced thermal solutions for electric drive / general power electronic applications.
- Understand rotor dynamics and develop solutions to overcome the mechanical challenges for high-speed motors.
- Knowledge and experience in using GA/AI/Machine learning as optimization tools for electric drive application.
- Capable of carrying designs through prototype building and evaluation.
- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities.
- Prior experience in thermo-mechanical analysis of traction drives is preferred.
- Prepare new proposals to the internal and external funding agencies.
- Have excellent oral and written skills for preparing and presenting research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, industry partners and others and at technical meetings such as IEEE sponsored conferences.

Basic Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with a focus on thermal and structure analysis applicable to power electronics.
- Must have experience and knowledge of structural and thermos-mechanical modeling and analysis tools such as COMSOL and Ansys.
- Knowledge of electrical simulation tools such as SIMULINK and PLECS is desired.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to make presentations to sponsors and others and to prepare reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles.
- Strong interpersonal skills to support team building and leadership.
- Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals, conferences or presentations at national meetings, are expected.
- Prior work experience with the automotive industry will be valued for this position.
- A strong commitment to scientific integrity is an important requirement.
Some travel will be required for this position.
