PURPOSE: 

We are seeking a R&D Associate who will focus on manufacturing and characterization of composite materials. You will be expected to collaborate on projects amongst groups focusing on basic and applied research in various fields applicable to your current projects. These groups may involve modeling, materials research, chemistry, robotics, mechanical testing, x-ray or neutron characterization, microscopy and others. This position resides in the Manufacturing Science Group, Energy & Transportation Sciences Division (ETSD), Energy and Environmental Sciences directorate (EESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

OVERVIEW:  

As part of our research team, you will advance the science of composites manufacturing science with emphasis on rapid composite manufacturing and additive processes. Your research will focus on development of novel processes and materials, particularly in the area of bio-derived materials. You will be expected to work simultaneously on multiple projects and interact with ORNL staff, industry and academic partners. Projects may focus on flow and behavior of discontinuous petroleum and bio-derived composites, un-reinforced polymers and hybrid structures. You will be expected to execute and manage of projects.

 

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develop traditional and additive manufacturing processes and materials for bio-derived composites
  • Develop manufacturing processes for PAN and PITCH based carbon fiber composites.
  • Characterize properties of materials generated using novel manufacturing methods
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and industrial partners, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in Chemical engineering or a related discipline with a focus on fiber reinforced materials
  • A minimum of six years of experience in the area bio-derived composite materials and carbon fiber manufacturing.

 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with simulation bio-derived composite material manufacturing and characterization
  • Experience with carbon fiber manufacturing
  • Experience with large scale additive manufacturing process
  • Experience with characterization methods, including Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), tensile testing and Infrared (IR) imaging
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated and safety conscious
  • Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs with the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines
