PURPOSE: 

We are seeking a R&D Associate who will focus on simulation for problems relevant to manufacturing science, particularly in the area of rapid composite manufacturing and additive processes.  You will be expected to collaborate on projects amongst groups focusing on basic and applied research in various fields applicable to your current projects. These groups may involve modeling, materials research, chemistry, robotics, mechanical testing, x-ray or neutron characterization, microscopy and others. This position resides in the Manufacturing Science Group, Energy & Transportation Sciences Division (ETSD), Energy and Environmental Sciences directorate (EESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

OVERVIEW:  

As part of our research team, you will develop modeling and simulation techniques for manufacturing science. Emphasis will be placed on rapid composite manufacturing and additive processes. Your research will focus on processing and behavior of polymer based materials and structures as well as metal-polymer hybrid structures. You will be expected to work simultaneously on multiple projects and interact with ORNL staff, industry and academic partners. Projects may focus on flow and behavior of discontinuous fiber composites, un-reinforced polymers and hybrid structures. You will assist with design of experiments to obtain necessary input for simulations as well as with acquisition of validation data.

 

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develop modeling and simulation techniques for additive manufacturing and rapid composite processing
  • Design experiments to obtain data for simulations and validation
  • Analyze large experimental and modeling datasets
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and industrial partners, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in mechanical engineering or a related discipline with a focus on computational solid mechanics
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the area of simulation for composite materials and additive manufacturing

 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with simulation of extrusion deposition additive manufacturing process
  • Experience with simulation of composite structures
  • Experience with large scale additive manufacturing process
  • Experience with characterization methods, including Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), tensile testing and Infrared (IR) imaging
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated and safety conscious
  • Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs with the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines
