We are seeking an R&D Associate who will focus on processing and characterization of high temperature structural metals using additive manufacturing technologies for energy applications. Research will focus in the fundamental scientific and technology developments needed for processing of these materials, post build characterization using mechanical testing, microscopy, and advanced statistical/ML processing methods. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Sciences Technology Directorate (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


As part of our research team, you will be among team members based at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) first facility established to provide affordable and convenient access to R&D expertise, facilities, and tools to facilitate rapid adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing of alloys. To improve the capabilities of this facility in the area of high temperature metals additive manufacturing, you will lead the effort for developing data driven techniques for the characterization and development of process-structure-property relationships. You will perform the fundamental science to improve materials selection and processing of high temperature metals processed through laser and/or electron beam powder bed.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform research related to processing high temperature metals using electron beam additive manufacturing in a broad range of energy applications including fossil, nuclear, automotive, aerospace, etc.
  • Perform advanced characterization of AM processed high temperature materials including multi length scale characterization of defects using computed tomography, SEM, EBSD, EDS, etc.
  • Develop and implement advanced statistical/machine-learning techniques for process optimization and material characterization for distilling valuable scientific information from raw characterization data
  • Develop methodologies for establishing process-structure linkages necessary for microstructure control
  • Performance research to understand structure-property linkages in additively manufactured materials via a combination of novel experiments and solid mechanics simulations
  • Develop partnerships with key leaders in metals additive manufacturing (AM) community from industry, academia, and government to further enhance the capabilities of metals powder bed AM at ORNL
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science, Weld Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a closely related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in metals processing, additive manufacturing, advanced metals characterization, and advanced characterization of materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
