The Battery and Fuel cells Roll-to-Roll Manufacturing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for an R&D Staff Scientist to conduct research on the synthesis of nano- and bulk functional materials; solid state chemistry; materials scale up; crystallography and crystal chemistry; structural, physicochemical and thermal characterization of materials and electrodes; and cell designs for automotive and grid storage applications, to grow and sustain a multidisciplinary battery R&D program on solid state batteries. The successful candidate will also be expected to write high impact papers and proposals, interface with battery researchers and managers, and conduct data and market analyzes and work with battery professionals. This position resides in the Department of Energy (DOE) Battery Manufacturing Facility (BMF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.


Major Duties / Responsibilities


  • Conduct R&D projects and expand battery research portfolio taking advantage of cell manufacturing capabilities and unique characterization tools.
  • Design and synthesize novel nano- and bulk functional materials.
  • Transition and scale up materials from the bench to pilot scale.
  • Characterize battery materials and electrodes by x-ray and neutron diffractions and other techniques.
  • Carry out cell designs through prototype building and evaluation.
  • Write high impact papers on transformational battery technologies.
  • Write proposals and interface with battery managers and sponsors.
  • Network and develop collaboration with other groups and divisions internally and with other national labs, industry, and utilities.
  • Supervise postdoctoral appointees and students.




Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Solid State Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or closely related fields.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in research institutes, national labs or academia.
  • Prior postdoctoral experience in the field of materials synthesis and batteries is highly desirable.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Solid State Chemistry or closely related fields.
  • Strong publication records, written and oral communication skills.

Strong ability and aptitude to write proposals, reports, publications and patents.
